A Mass of Christian burial was offered at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 9, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, for Sister Mary Eugene Monaldo, DC, former provincial secretary of the Emmitsburg Province. Sister died Monday, May 5, 2008 at Villa St. Michael, the province’s retirement residence in Emmitsburg. She was 78 years of age and 59 years of vocation.
The former Anna Monaldo was born in Washington, D.C. and lived in Saint Gabriel Parish. Anna graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in 1948 and entered the community of the Daughters of Charity in December of that same year, taking the name Sister Mary Eugene.
Sister received a bachelor’s degree in business education in 1965 from Saint Joseph College, Emmitsburg, and earned a master’s degree in business education with a minor in guidance from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. in 1971. Sister also studied in Boston, Massachusetts at Cardinal Stritch College, Emmanuel College and State College at Boston.
Sister Mary Eugene’s career in education began with the first of two assignments in Boston as an elementary teacher at the Home for Catholic Children (1950-1952), and Holy Childhood School (1960-1963). She also taught elementary grades in New York at Saint James School, Johnson City (1952-1960), and later taught business classes at Seton Catholic High School, Endicott (1963-1969).
Sister taught business at Bishop England High School in Charleston (SC) 1969-1971 and later in Washington, D.C. at Immaculate Conception Academy from 1971-1984. She was voted “Teacher of the Year” (1977). She was business manager at All Saints High School (1984-1987), and served as administrative assistant at Our Lady Queen of Peace School.
Sister returned to Emmitsburg in 1988 when she was appointed administrator of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. She remained in this duty for two years.
In 1991, Sister was called by the provincial council to serve as secretary for the Emmitsburg Province and held this position for 12 years. After Sister’s duty as provincial secretary ended in 2003, she was assigned to Villa St. Michael as assistant to the local superior. In 2005, she was sent to Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Maryland to serve as the local superior pro tem. Sister was injured in an accidental fall while at Sacred Heart and subsequently returned to Emmitsburg and Villa St. Michael.
During her 59 years as a Daughter of Charity, Sister Mary Eugene served as local superior at Immaculate Conception Academy, All Saints High School, and Our Lady Queen of Peace in Washington, D.C., and Caritas Community and Louise Community in Emmitsburg.
She also served as a member of the Providence Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees, Providence Hospital DePaul Corporation, Members of Sisters Senate-Vice President (All Saints High School); Mother Seton School Board of Trustees and Seton Center, Inc. Board of Directors, (Emmitsburg); Pilgrimage Committee of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. In addition she was a member of the National Business Education Association.
Daughter of the late Biagio and Caterina Monaldo, Sister Mary Eugene was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Monaldo. She is survived by sisters Veronica (Robert) McDonald, Winchester, Virginia, and Elisabeth Carroll Springfield, Virginia. Also survived by nephews Michael and Gregg (Rebecca) McDonald and niece Linda Anne McDonald; great nephews Justin and Joseph McDonald, and great niece Jessica McDonald.
