A Mass of Christian burial was offered at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 18, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, for Sister Raymond Newell, DC. Sister died suddenly on Friday, March 14, 2008, at Bethany Community, St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Emmitsburg. She was 78 years of age and 58 years of vocation. A native of Baltimore, the former Mary Evelyn Newell was one of ten children born to Ray George and Bessie Ruth Newell. She graduated from St. Martin High School in 1948 and entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity in December 1949. She received her bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, in 1970, and also attended Notre Dame College, Baltimore, and Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg. After receiving the habit, Mary Evelyn was given the name Sister Raymond. Her first assignment in 1951 was at Keating Day Nursery in Cumberland (MD) as a child care worker. After a few months she was reassigned to Seton Day Nursery in Troy (NY) where she also served as a child care worker until 1956. Thirty-two years as an elementary teacher followed. Sister taught elementary grades at Our Lady of Lourdes School, Utica (NY) 1956-1961 and 1967-1968; Cathedral Elementary and High School, Syracuse (NY) 1961-1963; St. Ann School in Bridgeport (CT) from 1963-1967; and St. Patrick School, Richmond (VA) 1968-1970. In Baltimore, Sister taught at St. Dominic School (1970-1977) and St. Michael School (1977-1980). She taught five years (1980-1985) at St. Joseph School, Martinsburg (WV). Her last teaching assignment was at Mother Seton School in Emmitsburg from 1985-1988. In 1988 with her teaching career at an end, Sister Raymond received a change of ministry. She was assigned to the Seton Center Thrift Shop in Emmitsburg. Sister was well-suited for this assignment with her love for people, her ability to relate to them, her awareness of their needs, and her hands-on service to them. She was very devoted to this duty which lasted sixteen years. Sister Raymond’s last active-duty assignment was refectorian in the Sisters’ dining room at the Provincial House. Hospitality was one of Sister’s special gifts and she used it to welcome visitors to the Provincial House and especially those who ate in the refectory. Sister’s extroverted personality, generosity, and thoughtfulness of others made her especially suited for this duty. Sister will be remembered as an excellent primary teacher and her love for children, especially infants. She was grateful for the smallest kindnesses and returned these kindnesses in many hidden works of charity. She regularly visited residents of St. Catherine’s Nursing Center and sister residents in the Villa. Sister Raymond was an exemplary Daughter of Charity. Perhaps the quote on her prayer card best describes how she lived her vocation: To pray is to breathe. Do it deeply and you will be filled with life. Sister is survived by brothers Jerry Newell of West Virginia, Lawrence W. Newell, Glen Burnie (MD), sisters Shirley Sears, Catonsville (MD) and Laverne Hand of Boynton Beach (FL), numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces/nephews, great-grandnieces/nephews and cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Daughters of Charity Support Fund for the Elderly and Infirm Sisters, 333 South Seton Avenue, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. |
