During a Celebration of the Eucharist in November at the Basilica of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Sister Mary Shea, a Daughter of Charity, was officially assigned "Sent on Mission" to Kenya where she will serve in the Daughters of Charity’s African ministries to parishes, prisons and slums.

Over the next few weeks, Sister Mary Shea will prepare for the mission ahead by joining the Daughters' Irish province and studying in Dublin before leaving for Kenya February 14, 2007.

Sister Mary Shea, a native of Raleigh, NC, has been a Daughter of Charity for 21 years and holds a master's degree in social work.

"Since my years as a seminary sister, I've had a desire to one day serve in the Daughters of Charity's overseas missions," said Sister Mary Shea. "The last 21 years have been a great preparation for me and confirmation of my calling."
